Independent Living Program for those under 55

Independent Living (IL) Services to Individuals 0-13 years of age:

This program provides training to young children who are experiencing blindness or vision loss early in life.  NCBVI provides training and support to the child, parent(s), school, or anyone who plays a role in the child's life.

Examples of IL Services for Youth:

  • Advocating for children with IEP development and school activities.
  • Early training on independent living skills, such as making simple meals independently.
  • Preparing children for transition to adulthood activities.
  • Supplementing the Expanded Core Curriculum.
  • Information and referral services.

NCBVI Program for IL Youth:

Project Independence is a summer camp for blind and low vision youth ages 8 and 13. Under the supervision of successful blind counselors, campers engage in fun recreational activities that enhance their independent living skills. Students learn basic cooking techniques, how to navigate independently using a long-white cane, and how to use Braille and adaptive technology in their daily lives at home and in the classroom.

 

Independent Living (IL) Services to Individuals 14-54 years of age:

This program is designed to help people who are blind and visually impaired adjust to their vision loss and gain the skills of daily living they will need to lead a full and productive life.

Examples of IL Services for Adults:

  • Low vision assessments and independent living aids, such as magnifiers and talking clocks/watches.
  • Independent living training, such as non-visual cooking alternatives, orientation and mobility services, and hobby task training such as sewing or woodworking.
  • Technology training on devices already owned by the individual.
  • Peer support and counseling.
  • Information and referral services.

 

There is no cost for services.  NCBVI is state and federally funded.
